Tom’s Hardware puts Amazon’s eero Outdoor 7 to the test as the first weatherproof Wi-Fi 7 mesh node designed to extend high-speed internet beyond your walls. Priced at $349 standalone or $400 with an AC adapter, this ruggedized device brings next-gen wireless connectivity to patios, yards, and outdoor workspaces while maintaining seamless integration with existing eero networks.
The IP66-rated Outdoor 7 survives extreme conditions from -40°F to 131°F and withstands 100 mph winds, making it suitable for nearly any climate. Its unique design features a Gore-Tex-like membrane that vents condensation while keeping water out, and installation options include wall-mounting or pole attachment. While the white exterior may stand out against darker surfaces, the compact 8.2 x 6.3 x 3.2 inch unit blends better than traditional networking gear.
Performance testing revealed the Outdoor 7 delivers nearly 1Gbps speeds at close range when wirelessly connected to an eero Max 7 network, though throughput naturally decreases with distance. At 50 feet, it maintained 388.5 Mbps wirelessly – more than double the indoor Max 7’s outdoor performance. The Power over Ethernet option provides alternative connectivity, though requires additional equipment like a $25 POE+ injector.
Setup proves straightforward via eero’s mobile app, with the Outdoor 7 automatically integrating into existing networks in about 13 minutes including physical installation. The dual-band node supports up to 200 devices and includes smart home protocols like Thread and Matter, though lacks the 6GHz band found in indoor Wi-Fi 7 models. Advanced features like Smart Queue Management optimize traffic, while the optional $100/year eero Plus subscription adds security tools and parental controls.
While not the most affordable solution, Tom’s Hardware concludes the Outdoor 7 stands alone as the best option for extending Wi-Fi 7 connectivity outdoors. Its combination of weather resistance, reliable performance, and seamless eero integration make it ideal for users wanting to bring high-speed internet to patios, gardens, or detached structures without compromising their existing mesh network’s functionality.
