The Netgear Orbi 770 series offers a more budget-friendly alternative to the high-end Orbi RBE973, providing robust Wi-Fi 7 mesh performance at a significantly lower cost. Priced at $1,000 for a router and two nodes, or $700 for a router and one node, the Orbi 770 delivers ample throughput for most digital families, making it a value-oriented choice for those seeking Wi-Fi 7 capabilities without breaking the bank.
The Orbi 770 utilizes 320MHz data channels, 6GHz data band, and 4K QAM operations to achieve impressive speeds. However, it comes with only three downstream Ethernet ports, which may be limiting for some users. Its tri-band design lacks a dedicated 5GHz band for wireless backhaul, resulting in slightly reduced throughput up close. Despite this, the Orbi 770 excels at longer distances, outperforming many competitors in range tests.
Design-wise, the Orbi 770 features a sleek, white tower design that is less obtrusive than its larger counterparts. Each unit is equipped with a Qualcomm Networking Pro 620 Wi-Fi chipset, capable of running six concurrent Wi-Fi streams. The system can cover up to 8,000 square feet with a three-pack, making it suitable for large homes.
The Orbi 770 offers a theoretical capacity of 10.768 Gbps, though real-world tests showed it delivering around 1.920 Gbps at close range. It performed well in network saturation tests, handling multiple devices and data streams without interruptions. The setup process is straightforward, with options to use either the Netgear Orbi app or a web interface.
While the Orbi 770 provides strong performance and coverage, it falls short in terms of warranty and support, offering only a 30-day warranty and 90 days of technical support. Extending the warranty to two years costs an additional $80.
In summary, the Netgear Orbi 770 is a solid choice for those looking to upgrade to Wi-Fi 7 mesh technology without the hefty price tag of premium models.
