LazyAdmin.nl takes a close look at Ubiquiti’s latest networking solution, the UniFi Cloud Gateway Max, which positions itself as a compelling middle ground between the company’s compact Cloud Gateways and full-featured Dream Machine lineup. This new gateway stands out by offering full UniFi OS support – including the coveted UniFi Protect surveillance system – in a compact, non-rackmount form factor priced from
$199 to $479 depending on storage configuration. The Cloud Gateway Max impresses with its quad-core 1.5GHz processor and 3GB of RAM, delivering 1.5Gbps throughput with security features enabled across its four 2.5GbE LAN ports and single 2.5GbE WAN port. The inclusion of NVMe storage (configurable from 512GB to 2TB) for UniFi Protect recordings addresses a key limitation of Ubiquiti’s other compact gateways, though LazyAdmin notes the base $199 model requires purchasing a separate storage sled.
When compared to Ubiquiti’s existing offerings, the Cloud Gateway Max emerges as a sweet spot for home users and small businesses. It significantly outperforms the Cloud Gateway Ultra with its faster ports and Protect support, while remaining more affordable and space−efficient than the rackmount Dream Machine Pro ($379 without storage). The review highlights that while the Dream Wall ($999) includes built-in PoE and WiFi 6, most users will achieve better wireless performance with separate access points positioned optimally.
Setup proves refreshingly simple – just connect power and internet, then configure via Ubiquiti’s mobile app. The web interface offers full control over networking features including VLANs, VPN (with 500Mbps WireGuard throughput), and the complete UniFi application ecosystem. LazyAdmin particularly appreciates the device’s clean design with status display and upcoming wall-mount option.
While noting the lack of PoE ports as a missed opportunity, LazyAdmin concludes the Cloud Gateway Max hits a perfect balance of capability, size and price for users wanting enterprise-like features without rackmount hardware. Its combination of 2.5GbE connectivity, full UniFi OS support, and Protect compatibility makes it one of Ubiquiti’s most versatile gateways yet for prosumers and small business deployments.
