PCMag examines Asus’s RP-AX58, a $99.99 Wi-Fi 6 range extender that aims to eliminate dead zones while offering seamless integration with Asus’s AiMesh ecosystem. This compact wall-plug design (5.9 x 2.8 x 3.4 inches) delivers AX3000 dual-band speeds up to 574Mbps (2.4GHz) and 2,402Mbps (5GHz), featuring a simple LED status indicator and a useful 1GbE LAN port for wired backhaul or access point functionality.
The review highlights the extender’s straightforward setup via Asus’s mobile app or WPS button, with the added flexibility to transform into a mesh node when paired with compatible Asus routers. Performance testing showed competitive throughput – 401Mbps at close range on 5GHz (outpacing Netgear’s EAX15) and consistent 2.4GHz speeds that nearly matched category leader TP-Link RE715X. However, signal coverage maps revealed limitations in whole-home reach, particularly on the far side of test environments.
While praising the RP-AX58’s solid build quality and AiMesh compatibility, PCMag notes the lack of an AC passthrough outlet as a practical drawback. The device ultimately delivers reliable Wi-Fi 6 extension at a mainstream price point, though the Editors’ Choice-winning TP-Link RE715X offers slightly better range and throughput for similar cost. For existing Asus router owners seeking to build out their mesh network, the RP-AX58 presents a compelling plug-and-play solution, but standalone buyers may find better value elsewhere.
